A few of our favorite things this week
June 11, 2015

Got a remodeling job to dot? Don't miss this: Better Futures Minnesota, our on-site service collaborator at Great River Landing, trains people to do construction demo and recycle materials – and here is a chance to buy those materials such as lumber, doors, plumbing fixtures. Their sale is this weekend. Example: reclaimed Douglas fir 2 x4s for $2 per board foot. What a great way to support one of Beacon’s community collaborators AND help reduce, reuse, recycle.

This is a menaingful service learning opportunity: We liked this game that a Habitat for Humanity staffer used to teach a group of high school volunteers the impact of stable housing. For example, in one family that moved into a Habitat house, all 5 family members (parents and sons) went on to earn college degrees. Volunteering is good, taking time to process what you've learned and why it's important and what else needs to change is great.

And what the heck, let’s give some props to Pope Francis for opening a 30-bed shelter just outside Vatican HQ for people on the streets in Rome. We like when people walk their talk.
