Meet the Staff is a monthly feature. This month, meet Jenny Lock, Nicollet Square collaborative partners manager, pictured at right.
How long have you worked at Beacon? Since November 2013.
Describe your job - not necessarily your official job description but what you really do every day. I screen new volunteers and sign them up for needed shifts, co-facilitate the youth leadership group, keep track of funding streams and manage which tenants fit under which stream, work closely with YouthLink and CommonBond to make sure any concerns are addressed and programming is happening smoothly and just generally help out where needed!
Why do you like working here? I love working in my own community- getting to connect different areas that I’m passionate about (youth work, housing, community partnerships and my own neighborhood) - and I get to do it as part of the Beacon community.
What’s one thing you are most proud of about your work? Watching the young people at Nicollet Square learn new things and work towards self-sufficiency in a safe environment
What kind of job would you have if you weren’t so busy helping to end homelessness? Homeless and highly mobile liaison for Minneapolis Public Schools.
What is your favorite book, movie, comedian, play, sport, pastime? I’m a big reader and I can’t choose just one book so here are my current top three: Mysteries of Pittsburg by Michael Chabon, This is How You Lose Her by Junot Díaz and Democracy by Joan Didion.
What is something that most people don’t know about you? I graduated from the literary arts department at the Perpich Center for Arts Education and loved it!
