I was moved to tears recently by the favor and blessing that was received by a guest in our Southwest program. Danielle Coplen and her family were here with us for far longer than is typical because of their family size (which is 8) and also the size of the obstacles that they had to overcome in order to be considered as tenants who didn’t pose a huge risk to any landlord. I reached out to one of our host coordinators, Dennis Moriarty, who is a lawyer, to come in and begin working with the family to see if he could help get some of the evictions and judgements off of their record. His diligent work with this family is PRICELESS.
Along the way, the Coplens have had several personal and financial setbacks. I 've watched Danielle (who struggles with health issues) continue to display patience and love to all of the members in this program; even when it was the hardest thing in the world to do both physically and emotionally. She and I had a real heartfelt conversation one day when she had kind of made up in her mind that things just weren’t going to happen for her. From our conversation she began to make a conscious effort to expect great things even when it didn’t look like great things were going to happen.
A few nights later, she received a phone call that informed her that a judge made the decision to expunge EVERY eviction and judgment from her record! Danielle was given a second chance at having a more stable life for her family.
Danielle and her family are approved for a home with supportive housing through a project under Wilder. It was a struggle for the family to come up with a large deposit, however after working with multiple community agencies (CAP, Salvation Army and FISH) we were able to secure the remaining amount they needed after their own savings was depleted. If all goes well, the family will move to their new home on June 16, 2017. Please keep them in your prayers. We are overjoyed for the family.
