DESCRIPTION:As we work towards our vision for “all people to have a home\,” we know that at the beginning of every month\, over 200\,000 households pay too much rent. Housing insecurity jeopardizes the health of individuals and families\, drives the growing numbers of people experiencing homelessness\, and increases the racial disparities already present.  \nWe gather the first Wednesday of every month as Beacon advocates to change this reality. We are working to create rental assistance for all through Bring it Home\, Minnesota\, create new policies to make more deeply affordable supportive housing available\, and other policies so all people have a home. During our 30-minute virtual meeting\, you will hear updates on Bring it Home\, Minnesota\, and our other campaigns\, hear from special guests or elected officials\, and be given concrete actions to do.   \nOur goal is an efficient\, clear meeting once a month for you to feel connected to the work and able to take impactful action. We have been holding this meeting successfully since June of 2020\, and for these three years\, people joining together to take action once a month have made a difference.  \nA Zoom meeting with Closed Captioning is available. DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the Met Council’s Community Development Committee Meeting. We will be there to witness their vote on the Metro Housing Redevelopment Authorities Annual Plan. We have been advocating all year to make changes to the annual plan and only achieved one small change. Our hope for an annual\, consistent flow of Project Based Vouchers will not be in the plan\, but we are successfully raising the issue and putting pressure on council members. And we intend to keep that pressure up until the Met Council decides to automatically allocate project based vouchers each year for the development of new affordable housing in the suburbs.  \nJoin us to witness to the Met Council members we aren’t giving up and not going away. SUMMARY:Prairie Pointe: Press Conference and Shakopee Planning Commission – 6/8/23
DESCRIPTION:The City of Shakopee approved land use for Prairie Pointe\, supportive housing for families\, in 2020 because of how important the development is in meeting the needs of the community and how deeply the projects aligns with the city’s stated goals and commitments around housing. The community and the city already came together around this development as a key answer to solving the growing concerns of housing instability. \nBut now\, there is a group seeking to undermine these community decisions by pushing to rezone the property in opposition to the city’s stated values and goals. We are shocked that the Planning Commission and City Council are considering this unprecedented move to invalidate the community decision to support Prairie Pointe and the dedicated investments that have been made. \nShow up in solidarity with Prairie Pointe for a press conference (at 6:15 p.m.) and the Planning Commission meeting (at 7 p.m.) on June 8 and demonstrate that you believe quality affordable housing belongs in all communities! \nNote: This is an in-person only event.

DESCRIPTION:As the Minnesota state legislature opens their session to debate and legislate on a projected surplus of nearly $8 billion\, Beacon leaders will gather to make sure Bring it Home\, Minnesota is on the legislative agenda in 2022.  In order to get a vote in the House this year\, Beacon leaders will need to coordinate our House visits early-on\, and turn-out our congregations in a big way this February. Beacon will prepare our leaders to host and facilitate a virtual visit with their legislator leading up to Beacon’s week of Lobby Days from February 14-18\, 2022. \nAt this training\, leaders will learn how to set-up and coordinate a virtual visit with their legislator\, and host participants from their legislative districts by providing technical support and experience to enhance the virtual conversation. Leaders will work with organizers to determine their Beacon Leadership Team members’ roles to focus the 45 minute conversation for their legislator on Beacon’s bold policy initiative\, Bring it Home\, Minnesota. We will also go over turn-out strategies to increase participation from their congregations in lobby day activities. \nClosed captioning is available at these virtual trainings.
