DESCRIPTION:The City of Shakopee approved land use for Prairie Pointe\, supportive housing for families\, in 2020 because of how important the development is in meeting the needs of the community and how deeply the projects aligns with the city’s stated goals and commitments around housing. The community and the city already came together around this development as a key answer to solving the growing concerns of housing instability. \nBut now\, there is a group seeking to undermine these community decisions by pushing to rezone the property in opposition to the city’s stated values and goals. We are shocked that the Planning Commission and City Council are considering this unprecedented move to invalidate the community decision to support Prairie Pointe and the dedicated investments that have been made. \nShow up in solidarity with Prairie Pointe for a press conference (at 6:15 p.m.) and the Planning Commission meeting (at 7 p.m.) on June 8 and demonstrate that you believe quality affordable housing belongs in all communities! \nNote: This is an in-person only event.

DESCRIPTION:The best way to bring more affordable housing to Minnesota is creating relationships. We are doing a series of candidate forums around the state to create and build these important and strategic relationships. \nOn Thursday\, October 6 at St. Barnabas Lutheran Church in Plymouth\, we are inviting all candidates for Senate districts 42 and 45 and House districts 42A and 45A\, focusing on races where neither candidate is an incumbent in the office for which they are running. \nA major topic for discussion at the forum will be the desperate need for rent support. Over 500\,000 Minnesotans pay more than 30% of their monthly income in rent. Tens of thousands will wait 5-7 years to receive a federal rent voucher. The critical lack of rent subsidies is also one of the biggest barriers to building more deeply affordable housing. To address this problem\, Beacon has introduced a bill called “Bring it Home\, Minnesota\,” which would create a state rent support program. We will be interested to learn how candidates would vote on this bill and their specific plan to reduce housing insecurity and homelessness in our community. \nPlease join us as we come together to hold our candidates accountable for providing more affordable housing in the state.

DESCRIPTION:It is time for Bring it Home\, MN and we are going to kickoff this 2022 legislative session strong! With a $7 billion surplus\, we have the opportunity to bring housing stability to all Minnesotans\, but it will only happen if we show up. \nJoin us for our February Rent is Due and Kickoff for our Bring it Home\, MN Week of Action Monday\, February 14 from 8:30-9:30 a.m. on Zoom. Then\, during the week of Feb. 14\, congregational teams are going to be meeting with their legislators to deliver the message\, “We want Bring it Home\, MN passed!” \nFor our Monday morning kickoff\, we invite everyone who will participate in a lobby visit and everyone who wants to support them. We will educate everyone on the campaign\, hear from our champion legislators\, train those preparing for lobby visits and give everyone a concrete action to do. DESCRIPTION:Click here for our Public Agenda – Joyful Urgency Convening December 2021 \nThe Beacon collaborative has shown tremendous power and resilience over the last year\, working hard to shelter families\, create homes and advocate for our vision that all people have a home. We have continued to lead the growing Bring it Home\, MN campaign. We have stepped boldly into new policy campaigns locally\, pushing the Met Council and City of Minneapolis to live into their commitment to creating homes for those at the lowest incomes.  And most of this work has been done all virtually over Zoom!    \nIt is time to come together to celebrate this great work and move forward in joyful urgency! You are invited to our first Beacon Congregational Convening since the start of the pandemic.  If you have not attended a convening before\, join us to ground ourselves in our vision and collective story and learn the transformational power of the work we are planning this next year. All congregations are invited in whatever way they have participated in Beacon. We especially welcome you if you just learned about Beacon through a congregational in-reach.
