SUMMARY:Beacon Now: Emerson Village
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re brand new to Beacon or have been a supporter for years\, we invite you to attend a virtual “Beacon Now” session. In this session\, we’ll touch on the basics of Beacon’s work\, go in depth on one aspect of that work\, and discuss how we can make a difference for our neighbors now. Encampments of neighbors without a home are again growing. Racial disparities in housing continue to harm communities of color. This session will cover the announcement of Emerson Village\, our newly launched family supportive housing development in North Minneapolis\, and how you can get involved in advocating for these massively needed homes for families. \n

SUMMARY:Rent is Due: Day of Action - 9/1/20
DESCRIPTION:Please register below to join us\, and raise our voices together for the September 1\, Rent is Due: Day of Action. \nOur vision is that all people have a home. The pandemic and economic crisis are building into an eviction crisis\, which could add to the already too large number of people experiencing unsheltered homelessness. We cannot let this happen\, and home is the solution. \nWe need Bring it Home\, MN\, a rent subsidy program that will allow all low-income Minnesotans the security and reassurance of home. \nOn Tuesday\, September 1\, when rent is due\, join us at 8:30 a.m. for a thirty-minute update meeting\, where we will learn more about the growing crisis\, reflect together over instructions on how to take action together. \nPlease register below to let us know you will participate and to receive further instructions on how to access the meeting. \nWe are committed to holding a Rent is Due: Day of Action every month\, so please mark your calendars for the rest of the year. We plan on having this event the first of the month\, except when it lands on the weekend. Our next two dates will be Thursday\, October 1\, and Monday\, November 2. \nWe look forward to joining with you on September 1. \n

SUMMARY:Scott and Carver Regional Assembly: The future of FMF\, Prairie Pointe\, and the housing crisis
DESCRIPTION:Scott and Carver Regional Assembly: The future of FMF\, Prairie Pointe\, and the housing crisis \nJoin almost a dozen congregations from the Southwest collaborative for a virtual meeting as we provide updates and action steps for the future of Families Moving Forward in Scott and Carver Counties\, Prairie Pointe\, and addressing the wave of evictions facing over 250\,000 of our neighbors across Minnesota. We are leading a campaign to change the story around housing and homeless in our communities and organizing for the solutions we need to match the crisis through the “Closer to Home Campaign” \nWe believe that God has given us what we need to thrive\, that we live in a world of abundance\, and that we don’t need to cut one human need for the other. We believe that no matter who you are\, where you live\, who you pray to\, or what you look like\, everyone should have a place to call home at the end of the day. \nJoin us on Thursday\, August 20 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. as we come together to ensure that everyone who calls our communities home has the ability to access and afford one of their own. \n

SUMMARY:Rent is Due: Day of Action - 8/3/20
DESCRIPTION:Please register below to join us for the August 3 Rent is Due: Day of Action. \nWe know that hundreds of thousands of our neighbors struggle to pay their rent every first of the month. This is disproportionately true for Black\, Brown\, and Indigenous families due to economic inequities stemming from centuries of historical injustice. As a state and as a community\, we have the resources to make sure all people have a home. We need to unite together to advocate for emergency rental assistance for immediate relief from the COVID pandemic and the current economic downturn\, and also work for long-term repair by creating a Minnesota rent subsidy program\, Bring It Home\, MN. \nOn Monday\, August 3\, we will join together at 8:30 a.m. for a thirty-minute update meeting\, where we will go over instructions on how to take action together. Please register below to let us know you will participate and to receive further instructions on how to access the meeting. \nWe are committed to holding a Rent is Due: Day of Action every month\, so please mark your calendars for the rest of the year. We plan on having this event the first of the month\, except when it lands on the weekend. \nWe look forward to joining with you on August 3. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Beacon Now: What’s Next in St. Paul?
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re brand new to Beacon or have been a supporter for years\, we invite you to attend a virtual “Beacon Now” session. In this session\, we’ll touch on the basics of Beacon’s work\, go in depth on one aspect of that work\, and discuss how we can make a difference for our neighbors now. Encampments of neighbors without a home are again growing. Racial disparities in housing continue to harm communities of color. This session will cover work we’ve done in St. Paul to provide home and support for adults who have experienced homelessness including those who lived in the 2018 encampment at the Wall of Forgotten Natives. You’ll also hear what’s next for homes to support neighbors in the Saintly City. \n

SUMMARY:Evicted: Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:3 Tuesdays: July 7\, 13\, and 21 at 4 p.m. \nAs racial injustice consumes our local and global attention\, Beacon leaders in St. Paul will take read and discuss the Pulitzer Prize winning book Evicted\, by Matthew Desmond. Desmond uses narrative nonfiction and a close lens on another Midwestern city with extreme racial inequality\, Milwaukee\, to explore the historical and present\, systemic and intimate realities of our housing catastrophe. Participants are urged (though not required) to attend all three sessions. We’ll also incorporate supplemental materials\, and take an intentionally race equity-focused lens with the understanding that many folks are familiar with the book but may not have had the chance to discuss it with a group in this way. \n

SUMMARY:Rent is Due: Day of Action - 7/1/20
DESCRIPTION:Please register below to join us for the July 1 Rent is Due: Day of Action. \nOn Wednesday\, July 1\, we will join together at 8:30 a.m. for a thirty-minute update meeting\, where we will go over instructions on how to take action together. Please register below to let us know you will participate and to receive further instructions on how to access the meeting \nWe are committed to holding a Rent is Due: Day of Action every month\, so please mark your calendars for the rest of the year. We plan on having this event the first of the month\, except when it lands on the weekend. In August and November\, we will hold this event on the following Monday\, August 3 and November 2. \nWe look forward to joining with you on July 1. \n

SUMMARY:Jim Crow of the North Discussion
DESCRIPTION:George Floyd was killed by a police officer in the Central neighborhood\, one of the historically redlined neighborhoods of South Minneapolis. The Mapping Prejudice project at the University of Minnesota has uncovered thousands of racial covenants on properties around Minneapolis and beyond which actually created the map used to exclude Black families from home ownership while investing in the wealth of white families. In spite of many changes\, Minnesota still has some of the widest racial disparities in the nation and patterns of police violence continue to endanger Black communities. Please watch the film on your own at the link below and join in a discussion with organizing staff about how the racist housing policies of the past are still haunting us – and how we might consider our work for shelter\, housing and policy in this context. \nWatch Jim Crow of the North here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWQfDbbQv9E \nThe link to join the virtual discussion will be in your registration confirmation email. \n
