Construction begins on Lydia expansion and renovation
Construction has begun on an expansion at Lydia, adding 40 new homes for individuals who have experienced homelessness to double the size of Beacon’s first apartment building. Renovations to the existing building will also ensure Lydia continues to be a quality, affordable, well-managed community for current and future residents.
The addition will include a new front entrance and reception desk, elevator, bike storage area, and a larger, upgraded community kitchen. New office space for staff with our support services partner Avivo and property management staff with Premier will also be part of the expansion. Renovations will make current apartments and community spaces more attractive, comfortable, and energy-efficient.
Doubling the number of homes at Lydia is possible because of the generosity and commitment of Beacon donors. It takes $15,000 per home – we call it a Seed – before construction even begins to plan, organize, design, and finance each of the 40 apartments that members of our community will soon call home. There are still Seeds to plant for Lydia – and gifts of all size help! To learn how your gift can create a home, email Sarah or visit www.beaconinterfaith.org/get-involved/make-a-gift/
The expansion reflects growing community support for the quality affordable housing Beacon provides. All of the homes are affordable to individuals with the lowest incomes through rent subsidies, and Lydia provides a safe, stable, supportive environment where people can put down roots.
Many Minnesotans are still waiting for homes they can afford, though, especially those who make less than 30 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI). While we celebrate the 40 new homes at Lydia, Beacon continues to challenge obstacles at the city, regional, and state level that prevent hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans from achieving the peace of mind that comes with a stable housing situation.

The Minneapolis Public Housing Agency awarded 40 rental assistance vouchers to ensure the homes will remain affordable for future residents with the lowest incomes. Capital funders include Minnesota Housing, the City of Minneapolis, Family Housing Fund, Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines, Hennepin County, and the National Equity Fund. Support for front desk and support services through Avivo is provided through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Continuum of Care funding.
