Create New Homes

Developing affordable, supportive homes for those with the lowest incomes.

Minnesota faces a shortage of affordable housing. We aim to do something about it.

Minnesota and the greater Twin Cities metro is failing to keep up with the accelerating demand for new affordable housing. And those of us with the lowest incomes or who are experiencing homelessness bear the brunt of this crunch.

As a Minnesota housing non-profit committed to change, Beacon leads the way in creating supportive housing and deeply affordable housing—right here in the Twin Cities.

For over 20 years, we’ve been building and renovating quality, affordable apartment homes that people want to live in throughout the Twin Cities Metro. And we’ll continue to step up until all people have a home.

As a collaborative of congregations, the Beacon community comes together to achieve more than we ever could on our own.

We organize to remind elected officials and decision-makers that there is strong public support for new apartment homes in our neighborhoods. And we do our homework to find the best locations and secure funding for affordable homes that serve individuals with low and extremely low income.

We create affordable homes and advance equitable housing across Minnesota

Together, we’re changing the landscape of home in our communities.

Beacon engages in new construction and rehabilitation projects throughout the Twin Cities metro area to provide quality, affordable homes for those with the lowest incomes.

Here’s what our interfaith collaborative has been able to accomplish so far by working together to address the need for affordable housing in the Twin Cities:

  • Over 700 affordable homes across 21 buildings have been created in the Twin Cities metro for low and extremely low-income individuals and families.
  • $113 million has been invested into the local economy through the development of Beacon’s affordable housing.
  • Another $86 million will also be invested in the creation of 290 new affordable homes across the Minneapolis and St. Paul Metro area in the near future.
  • Over 60% of Beacon housing is considered “supportive housing,” which means residents have access to on-site services that assist them in parenting, financial literacy, mental health, and other areas essential to healthy living.
  • 85% of our homes serve residents at 30% of the Area Median Income (AMI) and below.

Current affordable housing in development throughout the Twin Cities metro

We’re working on several affordable housing developments for people who have experienced or are at risk of homelessness, including:

  • Aster Commons: About 40 homes we’d like to create in Richfield, focused on autistic and other neurodivergent young adults.
  • Bimosedaa: About 50 homes in downtown Minneapolis with services tailored toward individuals in the Native community.
  • Emerson Village: About 40 homes in North Minneapolis for families.
  • Gladstone Crossing: About 40 homes we’d like to create in Maplewood, focused on young families.
  • Prairie Pointe: About 45 homes in Shakopee for families.
  • Vista 44: About 50 homes in Hopkins for families.
