It’s Time For Bring It Home, MN!

Bring It Home, MN. HF 40 / SF 333. Authors: Rep. Howard/Sen. Dziedzic

Imagine a Minnesota where every low-income family can afford their home. Right now, over 500,000 Minnesotans live in households that struggle to pay rent every month. These working families have to make difficult choices as they pay their medical bills, their child’s field trip fee, and try to keep their home.

The pandemic has exposed how vulnerable and broken our housing system is. While the state and federal relief efforts will help immensely, we need a long-term solution to address the deep and abiding racial and economic inequities families face in all corners of our state.

In Minnesota, we care for one another. We can create housing stability for all Minnesotans. This is possible when we work together.

What the Bill Does:

Bring It Home, Minnesota will provide rent subsidies for all eligible low-income Minnesotans, so they only pay 30% of their income toward rent. When rent is more manageable, budgets stretch further, so kids get clothes that fit, seniors can afford life-saving medications, and the car gets fixed when it breaks down.

A rent subsidy is a simple, cost-effective solution for housing stability. When a family qualifies, they receive a housing voucher that allows them to find a private market home that meets their needs. After they find the home, the voucher covers the difference between what the family can afford (30% of their income) and the market rate cost of rent. The rent subsidies can also be project-based.

Any individual or family under 50% of the Area Median Income (AMI) and who pays more than 30% of their income toward rent is eligible. The AMI is calculated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for each region. For example, 50% of AMI for a family of four is $51,700 in the Twin Cities, $42,350 in Le Sueur County, and $36,300 in Morrison County.
