Understanding Housing First, supportive housing, and affordable housing
Ensuring everyone has a stable, affordable place to call home requires more than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Different families and individuals face different challenges so Beacon offers several types of housing to meet the unique needs of those we serve. These housing types include Housing First, supportive housing, and affordable housing.
Here’s how each model plays a crucial role in addressing housing insecurity in Minnesota.
Housing First: A pathway from homelessness to stability
How do you solve homelessness? You get people into homes.
While that might seem like an oversimplification, that’s part of the idea behind Housing First. This model focuses on providing immediate access to stable housing for individuals experiencing homelessness.

When people have stable housing, they are in a much better position to secure employment and improve their mental and physical health. Imagine trying to accomplish those things if you live on the streets. At that point, your main priority is to find a space where you can rest without someone harming you or stealing what few belongings you have while you sleep.
By reducing barriers to housing, Housing First empowers residents to rebuild their lives with professional supportive services nearby.
Supportive housing: more than just a home
Supportive housing combines affordable housing with on-site services to help individuals and families stay housed and work toward long-term stability. This model especially benefits individuals and families facing additional challenges related to housing security.

Residents in supportive housing have access to resources like mental health counseling, job training, financial literacy programs, and other healthcare services, with many of those services offered on-site.
Access to supportive services creates a strong foundation for families and individuals, leading to greater stability and improved overall well-being—outcomes that translate into overall health for individuals and stronger communities.
Affordable housing: offering a foundation for security
Affordable housing provides apartment homes for individuals and families with low incomes. The low cost of monthly rent ensures that low-income residents do not have to spend over 30% of their monthly income on rent, helping working households maintain financial stability and reducing the risk of homelessness.

By keeping rent manageable, affordable housing allows residents to allocate resources toward other essentials like food, healthcare, education, and long-term savings.
Affordable housing plays a crucial role in promoting economic mobility and providing individuals and families with the stability they need to thrive.
Here’s why a multifaceted approach to housing matters
Each of the housing models Beacon offers plays a unique role in ensuring everyone has access to a safe, stable home.
Housing First addresses immediate homelessness, supportive housing provides longer-term assistance for complex needs, and affordable housing prevents housing insecurity for low-income households.
