What is Prairie Pointe?

Prairie Pointe is a multi-family apartment building in Shakopee with 42 affordable homes for families from Scott and Carver counties, Many of the homes serve families who have experienced housing insecurity, offering them the stability of a home in a vibrant community where parents and children can flourish.

Living at Prairie Pointe

  • 28 of the apartments are reserved through Scott and Carver Counties’ coordinated entry system for families or social services. If you believe you may quality for one of these apartments, please contact the counties to make an inquiry. Volunteers of America (VOA) is the service provider and Interim VOA-MN Program Manager Dom Mcdew may also be reached at dom.mcdew@voamn.org should you need more information. They can email information about the SMAC CoC priority list process.
  • 14 affordable family units will be reserved for families making 50% or less than the area median income. These homes will be available through a typical rental process. Interested applicants may contact (952) 423-0127, or e-mail prairiepointe@sheltercorp.com.

The Essentials

  • 42 high-quality, professionally managed apartment homes
  • Affordable homes for families – some of whom make less than $35,000 a year
  • Construction began in early 2025 and families began moving into Prairie Pointe in November 2025.
  • Volunteers of America Minnesota and Wisconsin (VOA), a well-respected community nonprofit, is the on-site service provider. Beacon chose VOA as a partner based on its track record of providing high-quality and responsive supportive services to families and individuals to help people thrive, achieve housing stability, build their income, and access health and community services.

Prairie Pointe Building Design

  • Prairie Pointe’s final design was shaped by community feedback to integrate seamlessly into the existing neighborhood.
  • 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-bedroom apartments
  • Sloped roof, bay windows, dormers, and decorative entrance canopies
  • Large front yard with attractive trees, shrubs, lawn, and rain garden with native plants
  • Protected children’s play area and garden
  • Existing fence along east lot line and new six-foot privacy fence along south property line
  • Mix of evergreen trees to provide landscape screening between south side of building and adjacent homes
  • Additional new trees in existing parking lot to add shade and enrich site appeal
